
Australia’s world under 21 speedway champion Darcy Ward has been named the 2011 FIM Rookie of the Year at a gala ceremony in Portugal on December 3.
The 18-year-old took out the award, voted on by the public, after a brilliant season highlighted by his victory in the world under 21 championship, his second in succession.
And earlier in the year, he made it back-to-back wins in the equivalent Australian title.
Ward will compete in the upcoming 2011 Australian Solo Speedway Championship, where he will be hoping to claim his first national title at the open level.
Germany’s Stephanie Laier (women’s motocross world champion) was voted FIM Woman of the Year, while Poland's Tomasz Gollob (speedway world champion) received the award for FIM Personality of the Year.
At the Suzi Perry-hosted ceremony, legends such as Giacomo Agostini, Roger de Coster, Jordi Tarres, Anders Eriksson and Ivan Mauger were joined on stage by the likes of Jorge Lorenzo, Antonio Elias, Max Biaggi, Antonio Cairoli, Toni Bou, David Knight, Tomasz Gollob, Stephanie Laier, Ludivine Puy and Laia Sanz as winners of their respective 2010 world championships.
