Ward pleads not guilty to sexual assault
The Australian speedway rider has appeared in court in southern England, pleading his innocence just days before he's due to fly back homeAustralian speedway star Darcy Ward has pleaded not guilty to sexually assaulting a girl in Britain.
The 19-year-old appeared at Bournemouth Crown Court in southern England on January 19 and denied police allegations that assaulted a 17-year-old girl between August 16 and August 19, 2011, at a hotel in Dorset.
Dressed in a suit and tie, the sandy-haired Ward replied a simple "not guilty" when asked if he penetrated the girl "with an object, namely a bottle".
Ward’s barrister, Stuart Jones QC, said in court: “As you know, our client resides in Australia. He's going back this weekend and he's not coming back until the end of February.
"When he comes back here, and he's intending to at the end of February when the (world championship) racing season commences, thereafter his weekly riding will involve riding in Poland on Sundays and Sweden on Tuesdays.”
Brisbane-born Ward, who has secured a place in the in the 2012 FIM Speedway Grand Prix World Championship after a few impressive cameos in 2011, is now able to continue travelling after a $7450 bail was posted.
Ward, and a co-accused who can’t be named, will stand trial on the charges, with a date still to be confirmed.
