Ward makes spectacular entry into U21 ranks

Prevails in last turn speedway thriller

Darcy Ward is the 2009 Australian under 21 speedway champion after a superb last corner 'inside-out' pass on Kozza Smith at the Central Coast Speedway in Gosford (NSW) last night.

After top scoring in the heats, Ward was made to work hard in the final in a game of nerve with Smith. But he showed too much precision at the death knell to win the under 21 title just a year after coming out of the junior (under 16) ranks.

Aaron Summers was third in the A-Final from Justin Sedgmen, who earlier had won the B-Final from Richard Sweetman to move into the night's decider.

The racing was intense in Gosford, with a number of big crashes in the heats. Todd Kurtz (ankle) and Taylor Poole both felt the wrath of the forceful racing and failed to see out the night.

Meanwhile, Ward's only defeat was at the hands of Smith in heat six, but redemption was sweet for the teenager in the final.

Ward succeeds Chris Holder as the under 21 champion.
