KTM's Jonny Walker has signalled a change at the top of the pecking order in the rarified air of exctreme enduro on July 19 after taking victory in the 11th edition of the Red Bull Romaniacs in the Carpathian Mountains of Romania.
The 23-year-old British rider managed to defeat the hard-as-nails Graham Jarvis (Husqvarna), who has been both his nemesis and his idol. Jarvis was the three-time defending champion.
Eighteen-year-old upstart, South African Wade Young, took third spot ahead of two Romaniac veterans: Paul Bolton (KTM) and KTM factory rider Andreas Lettenbichler, the trio all KTM mounted. New Zealander Chris Birch (KTM) was sixth.
Walker and Jarvis battled it out over the final day where they still had to ride 180km knowing any mistake would be costly. They also had to face the infamous and near vertical Gusterita hill climb at the end of the day, then sit it out to have GPS times verified before Walker took his well-earned place on the top of the podium.
