When the electric motorcycle revolution finally captures the motorcycle buying public's imagination, who will be the market leader? Brammo? Zero Motorcycles?
Maybe it will be this mob from Spain, Volta.
The Spanish company has been toying with electric motorcycle designs for a few years now and will launch its new Volta EV-1 in Europe at the end of the year.
Showing off an aggressive streetfighter design, the electric motorcycle will be aimed primarily at urban commuters, with a cruising range of around 70km per recharge. The EV-1 can be recharged via a common household wall socket, though the company has not confirmed how long a full recharge takes - nor how much the new model will cost.
Volta will offer it's new EV-1 in two guises - the entry-level model gets a more affordable battery pack that outputs 15hp (11kw) while the top-shelf model brings a more capable 30hp (22kW) to the party. Think of them as the 125 and 250cc versions.
There's a lockable storage area big enough for a full face helmet where the fuel tank normally resides on a petrol-powered motorcycle, and the EV-1 features a pillion seat and footpegs for a passenger.
Volta will be hoping to snare new customers with the bike's edgy design and green credentials. The Spanish company reckons the bike will cost about 50 Euro cents per kilometre to run.
