Villopoto on a roll, Reed third

Kawasaki's star rider has won his fifth AMA SX race of the season, while Australia's Chad Reed was third

Australia’s Chad Reed has continued his consistent run of podium results with a third place finish at round 10 of the 2011 AMA Supercross Championship in Indianapolis on March 12, while Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto extended his lead with another decisive victory.

Villopoto led all 20 laps to register his fifth victory of the season, while James Stewart (Yamaha) passed Reed on lap 11 en route to an eventual second place finish.

Reed actually scored the holeshot, but was unable to take advantage of his windfall lamenting that he “still has some things to work on”.

There are no excuses,” Reed stated. “I got beat tonight, I holeshot the race but didn’t ride well.

“It was disappointing to be in the fight and not be able to go on with it.

“To be honest I was lucky to be able to hold onto third. I couldn’t snap out of it and couldn’t change up what I was doing wrong. I have a few things to work on.

“There is a lot of racing to go and I am not focusing on the championship I just want to ride well.”

With seven rounds remaining, Villopoto now leads by 26pts from Stewart, followed by Reed (193), Dungey (183) and Trey Canard (Honda, 169). Australia’s Brett Metcalfe (Suzuki) is ninth on 107pts, despite not making the latest final.

But two of Metcalfe’s countrymen did, with Michael Byrne (Suzuki) finishing 13th and Tye Simmonds (KTM) 16th.

The championship now heads to Jacksonville’s Everbank Field on Saturday, March 19.
