Vietnamese motorcycle ban back on cards

In a new plan, 'non-residential' bikes would be restricted from entering the capital by 2025

A motorcycle ban in the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi, is back on the cards after plans were recently unveiled by the city's Department of Transport to combat traffic congestion.

Under the plans, non-residential motorcycles would be restricted from entering the capital by 2025.

In 2013, a government-led development plan to reduce traffic predicted there would be around 36 million motorcycles in the country by 2020. However, recent figures have shown that current numbers stand at somewhere between 42 and 45 million. By 2020 it is expected that those numbers will rise to in the region of 60 million.

"Vietnam's motorbike planning has been completely disrupted," said Dr. Luong Hoai Nam, an economic expert, in an interview with Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper.

Nam also noted the situated in China, where there are currently around 150 cities where motorcycles are prohibited.
