After a drip feed of information and several teaser video clips, Yamaha has finally released full details of its new supersport bike, the 2017 YZF-R6.
Immediately obvious is the striking new bodywork in which the model is wrapped, but the changes are anything but skin deep. While the 599cc, DOHC, liquid-cooled, four-cylinder engine remains, the R6 now adopts a ride-by-wire throttle that facilitates a multi-mode traction control and selectable drive modes.
The R6 also scores the R1's braking package, with larger 320mm front discs and radial-mount four-piston Nissin calipers, all backed by ABS. The new front fork is also taken from the R1, the 43mm-diameter KYB setup tuned to suit the R6's unique characteristics. Also new is the KYB rear monoshock, which features four-way adjustment for preload and damping.
The bike offers three drive modes and six traction control modes (plus off) to suit the conditions and the rider's preference. Also new is the seat and magnesium subframe, the lightweight aluminium fuel tank, and the analogue and digital LCD instrumentation.
That new bodywork with R1-derived tailpiece also incorporates full LED lighting, with the front of the bike featuring integrated turn indicators.
Yamaha says the new R6 brings "additional mass-centralisation to the proven R6 package, along with updated suspension, for improved front-end feedback and greater cornering confidence."
No word yet on local pricing or availability; Bikesales will bring you more information on the new R6 as it comes to hand.
