Victoria will soon join NSW, ACT, Tas and SA in allowing learners to ride mid-capacity motorcycles from an approved list - called Leaner Approved Motorcycles (LAMs).
The scheme will take around 12 months to be introduced, says the Minister for Roads and Ports, Tim Pallas (pictured at the announcement).
Regulations are expected to be modelled on the NSW scheme, which allows learners to ride machines up to 660cc in capacity, with a power to weight ratio of up to 150kW per tonne.
This will allow new and learner riders access to a greater number of bikes that have safety features like ABS and combined braking systems," said the Minister.
"It also encourages riders to stay on the same bike for longer."
The Minister also used the launch of the LAMs scheme to announce eight projects to fix motorcycle crash 'black spots' around the state.
Costing $11.6 million, they are funded by the $50-plus motorcycle tax that is paid as part of the annual registration fees.
