Vic motorcycle strategy off the rails?

Has the writing of the Vic government's new motorcycle strategy been handed over the Australian Road Research Board (ARRB)?

That's the fear of experienced lobbyists in Victoria and NSW.

One lobbyist writes: "This would be a disaster for Victorian riders and cast a pall over the rest? of Australia. (The ARRB staff concerned) has little knowledge or understanding of motorcycles and ?has on occasion, expressed strong anti-motorcycling sentiments… The end result will be further marginalisation."

ARRB has been given the role of acting as project manager for the writing of the new strategy and members of VMAC (the government's consultative committee for bikes) have been contacted for their views.

The rewrite is in part in response to a report on the existing strategy, done last year by LdR Consultants. It was highly critical of the existing document. VicRoads, which is charged with creating and implementing much of the strategy, has come in for considerable criticism recently for its anti-motorcycling attitudes.

At this stage we'll have to wait and see what comes out of the process.
