Vespa Elettrica to go into production

The first all-electric scooters will start rolling out of its famous Pontedara factory in September 2018

Piaggio has announced the Vespa Elettrica, which made its public debut at the 2017 EICMA motorcycle show in Milan, will go into full-scale production.

According to Piaggio, price for the electric scooter will be “in line with the high-end bracket of the Vespa range presently being marketed”.

Piaggio Australia says there are no plans to bring the Vespa Elettrica Down Under.

The Elettrica has a range of around 100km and, while other brands are beginning to explore the idea of a swap-and-go battery set-up, the Vespa employs a conventional-style battery which can be fully charged in four hours with a domestic wall socket.

At EICMA last year, Piaggio also unveiled a hybrid version of the same machine, but instead of the four-stroke engine aiding the electric motor to power the scoot it powers a generator which sends extra charge to the battery and doubles the available range.

No word on whether the hybrid is likely to go into production as well.
