It’s been an ‘on again, off again’ pre-release ride, but the bottom line is Australian buyers can still snap up an example of Vespa’s limited-edition scooter, the 946.
Vespa had initially said the model was going to be restricted to a single production run, the production line then to be dismantled to ensure the 946’s exclusivity forever more.
A flood of worldwide interest soon saw that idea scuppered, however, with the Italian two-wheeled style icon then announcing a limited-edition run would be produced each year.
A few months back Vespa Australia had previously announced that all 52 Australia-bound examples of the first run of the model were spoken for, but if you missed out then it’s all good news now: that allocation has been increased (“to fewer than 100,” says Vespa), and stock is still available – if you’re quick.
Powered by Piaggio’s 125cc, three-valve, fuel-injected, single-cylinder engine, the 946 has visual styling cues that hark back to the original MP6 prototype of 1946 but it benefits from the best of modern technology, with full LCD instrumentation, full LED lighting, a horizontally mounted rear shock, ABS, and traction control.
Vespa says only production line workers with a minimum of 10 years’ experience were selected to assemble the 946, which represents the pinnacle of the manufacturer’s range.
The 946 is available in black or white for $11,990 (plus on-road costs). See your nearest Vespa dealer for more information.
