Vespa Australia has announced all 52 examples of the new Vespa 946 secured for our market have been sold, with delivery scheduled to commence in November.
Vespa had initially said the 946 would be a super-exclusive, one-off production run, with a special production line devoted to the model at Vespa’s Pontedera factory to be dismantled soon after.
However, Vespa has received such a strong market response to the 946 it now says it will continue to produce the model in a limited run each year. Exclusive – just not quite as exclusive as initially promised.
The first example of the 946 was flown to Australia just in time for the recent Piaggio dealer conference and press launch of the new BV 350, Yourban 300 and X10 500 (click here for that review), where the assembled journos got their first up-close glimpse of the svelte new machine.
With the inaugural 2013 release of the 946 dubbed ‘Ricordo Italiano’, the model is powered by Piaggio’s 125cc, three-valve, single-cylinder engine. Its design blends modern technology with lines that hark back to Vespa’s original MP6 prototype of 1946, while features include fully LCD instrumentation, full LED lighting, a horizontally mounted rear shock, ABS, and traction control.
According to Vespa, only production line workers with a minimum of 10 years’ experience were selected to assemble the 946.
The 2013 Vespa 946 comes in either black or white and it’s priced at $11,990 (plus on-roads).
