Australia’s Chris Vermeulen is making a MotoGP comeback from May 18-20 at a circuit which holds special memories for him – Le Mans in France.
Vermeulen won his one and only MotoGP race at Le Mans in 2007 when he was a factory rider for Suzuki, and now he’s returning for a one-off ride to replace injured American Colin Edwards on a CRT bike for NGM Mobile Forward Racing.
Edwards broke his collarbone in the last MotoGP round at Estoril, won by Australia’s Casey Stoner.
“First of all I would like to wish Colin a speedy recovery,” said Vermeulen. “I am grateful to have the opportunity to race back in MotoGP with the NGM Mobile Forward Racing team. I am looking forward to my first time on the bike being at Le Mans… and excited to be racing at the top level of motorcycling again and look forward to working with the team.”
Vermeulen was a MotoGP factory rider for Suzuki from 2006-2009, after which he switched to World Superbike on a Kawasaki. But a crash in the opening round at Phillip Island in 2010 badly injured his knee, and even after surgery he wasn’t able to perform at his best.
He left Kawasaki at the end of 2011, and is now back to full fitness based on some impressive triathlon outings on the Sunshine Coast earlier this year.
Vermeulen last raced at Brno in World Superbike on July 10, 2011.
