Moto trials legend Martin Lampkin has passed away from cancer. He had been fighting the disease for over 12 months.
The Lampkin name is synonymous with moto trials competition, and Martin has his name firmly etched into the record books as the very first world champion, which he achieved in 1975 when he defeated fellow Bultaco rider Yrjo Vesterinen and compatriot Malcom Rathnell to win the title.
Two years earlier, Lampkin was victorious in the European moto trials title, which in those days took on de-facto world championship status. Lampkin was also a multiple winner of other major moto trials events, including the famed Scottish Six Days Trial from 1976-1978.
After he retired, Martin threw his support behind son Dougie, who went onto win an amazing 12 world titles: seven outdoors and five indoors.
Martin is not only survived by Dougie, but also his second son Harry and wife Isobel.
RIP.
