The motorcycle journalism community is in shock following the passing of Kevin Ash while on a BMW press launch in South Africa. The popular scribe is survived by his wife and three daughters.
Ash, 53, was testing the 2013 model R 1200 GS on a dirt road when the incident occurred. BMW has put out the following release:
“It is with deep regret that BMW Motorrad confirms the fatal injury of Kevin Ash in a motorcycle accident during a launch event in South Africa. The accident happened to the north of a town called George, 250km east of Cape Town. Out of respect for Kevin's family and friends, no further information is being made available at this time.”
Ash was the former road test editor at British weekly MCN before embarking on a hugely successful freelance career. He has been the motorcycling correspondent at The Daily Telegraph for the past 15 years, and his name has appeared in Australian publications such as Two Wheels – his ‘Kash for Comment’ column always a great read.
‘Ashy’ even penned some stories for the Bikesales Network over recent years, and his technical knowledge alongside the flair for the written word made his stories compelling reading. You can read those yarns by clicking here.
Here’s what MCN said about Ashy: “Known for his technical authority, clarity of expression and prolific output, Kevin was also sharp-witted, great company, a devoted husband and father to his wife and three daughters and universally liked.”
The Bikesales Network sends its sincerest condolences to the Ash family and his past and present colleagues.
