Supermarkets are selling motorcycle gear during the strict Melbourne lockdown, while motorcycle dealerships and apparel outlets have been forced to shut.

Under the COVID-19 Stage 4 restrictions, Melbourne supermarkets can remain open, as they sell food and other essential items, but motorcycle-related businesses are considered non-essential and have resorted to fulfilling online orders only.
The VACC argues that if dealerships and apparel stores are not allowed to sell motorcycle safety equipment during the lockdown, then supermarkets should not be able to either.
Alternatively, motorcycle stores should be allowed to open, as there is a strong argument that motorcycle safety gear is essential.

Aldi is currently advertising a motorcycle helmet for $79.99 and a pair of motorcycle gloves for $39.99. There are also denim jeans, luggage bags, and various other motorcycle items for sale.
Given the low prices, it would be fair to question the quality of these products, and the VACC believes this undercutting is affecting proven motorcycle businesses, especially as they are unable to operate during the lockdown.
The VACC has called on the appropriate regulatory bodies to ensure this kind of behaviour is stopped in order to save struggling motorcycle businesses.
