BMW Motorrad has confirmed that three new bikes will be launched at the 2014 Intermot motorcycle show in Cologne from October 1-5 – and we already know one will be an updated S 1000 RR.
We haven't come across any spy pics of the 2015 S 1000 RR, but according to BMW Motorrad the bike “goes into its next generation with an optimised engine for enhanced performance and rideability”.
There's also revised suspension geometry, and we'd expect some aesthetic tweaks – but certainly nothing far-reaching.
The updated S 1000 RR could be coming at just the right time, as the new EVO rules for world superbike come into force next year, which mandates more production-focussed engine and chassis combinations. BMW Motorrad doesn't run a factory team in world superbike, but some top-flight privateers could still really do some damage.
Of the other two premieres, one could be the S 1000RR-based S 1000 XR sportstourer (second image), but obviously with more relaxed ergonomics and longer-travel suspension. BMW obviously doesn't want give its tag as the king of the adventure manufacturers up anytime soon!
The S 1000 XR's power characteristics will probably be more closely matched to the S 1000 R, which carries a major mid-range torque advantage over the S 1000 RR -- and way more suited to the adventure set.
As for the third piece of the Cologne puzzle, we haven't seen one of BMW's small-capacity Indian-based collaborations with TVS Motor Company yet (HERE), while the R 1200 R is rumoured to be getting the company's water-cooled Boxer engine, and well as styling that follows the Concept Roadster path (HERE
).
BMW Motorrad is certainly on a high at the moment, with the company selling more than 90,000 units in the first eight months of a year for the first time. A total of 90,226 motorcycles and maxi scooters have been sold worldwide through the end of August, representing a 7.6 per cent growth over the figures recorded in the same period in 2013 (83,890).
