A redesigned 2021 KTM 1290 Super Adventure R has been unveiled, with the Austrian manufacturer detailing a number of changes from the previous model.
Joining the previously-announced 2021 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S, the upgraded R version will offer enhanced off-road performance for rugged long-distance touring.

Headlining the list of changes for the 2021 KTM 1290 Super Adventure R is new bodywork and geometry, which KTM says greatly improves the machine’s agility and handling.
The new ergonomic design allows for a lower centre of gravity, while a sharper cornering sensation comes thanks to the steering head being moved back by 15mm. The front section of the engine has also been relocated, and KTM has introduced a slightly longer new die-cast open-lattice swingarm for a greater depth of feeling under acceleration.
A new three-part fuel tank holds 23-litres and sits lower on the bike. The subframe has also been reconstructed with a stepped seat that sits 880mm high.
Also adding to the bike's improved handling is reworked suspension, with the WP Xplor gear providing 220mm travel in the split-damping 48mm fork, and the same travel in the PDS shock. The R offers a more traditional adjustable setup compared to the S model's elaborate semi-active configuration.
The new 2021 KTM 1290 Super Adventure R also features state-of-the-art tech that includes a new Bosch 6-axis lean angle sensor, traction control, motor slip regulation, stability control and offroad ABS. In addition to the four standard ride modes, KTM will also offer an optional Rally mode that allows for more aggressive off-road performance.
KTM has also fitted the new machine with an upgraded 7-inch TFT dash, which features a new connectivity unit. When paired with the KTM My Ride app, users can access clear turn-by-turn navigation, as well as other functions.
Notably, KTM has opted not to include the radar technology and adaptive cruise control that was introduced this year on the S model.
The 1301cc V-twin engine is now Euro5 compliant, and maintains a power output of 160hp. It does however lose 2Nm (140Nm to 138Nm), most likely to compensate for the Euro5 changes. Peak power comes at 9000rpm, while peak torque arrives at 6500rpm.
Additional changes include optimised airflow, a reworked and easy-to-access airbox, lighter engine cases, new pistons, altered coatings, and a re-jigged two-header exhaust system. The PANKL gear box has also been re-worked for improved shifting, and better performance and response from the optional quickshifter.
Elsewhere, there are new adventure-spec Bridgestone tyres and Alpina aluminium spoked rims, a new striking graphics kit, improved keyless ignition, tyre pressure monitoring, Brembo braking components, adjustable levers, pegs and handlebars, and an adjustable windshield.
Like its S sibling, the new 1290 Super Adventure R comes with several electronic package options including a Rally Pack and a Tech Pack, which each bundle optional functions not featured as standard.
The latest generation KTM 1290 Adventure R is set to arrive in Australian and New Zealand dealerships from May 2021. Pricing is yet to be formally announced but the 2020 R model went for $29,995 ride away, while the 2020 S model checked in at $29,195 ride away.
