Uni students ‘blamed' for rule change

The minimum age for obtaining a motorcycle learner's permit in Myanmar has been lowered by one year “for the convenience of university students”
According to a report in the Myanmar Times newspaper, the minimum age for obtaining a motorcycle learner’s licence in the country has been lowered from 17 to 16 years – thanks to university students!
Officials said the change had been made for the convenience of university students and “was in line with regulations in other countries”.
As in many developing nations, a large number of university students rely on motorcycles for transport, but spot checks in Myanmar – which has begun opening its doors to foreigners after years of oppressive rule by a military junta -- had found that students under the age of 17 were riding illegally without a licence because of the age limitation. The new rule aims to eliminate such problems in the future.
Learners are restricted to 125cc bikes in Myanmar.
