UK skewing towards adventure bikes

The 2011 sales figures have just been released, with segments like sport and touring continuing to lose devotees, while adventure bikes and scooters are on a roll

Adventure bikie and scooter sales in the UK rose by 13.6 and 20.1 per cent respectively in 2011, as the seven other market segments all dropped.

In total, 93,849 motorcycles (excluding ATVs) were retailed in 2011, a 2.2 per cent decease on 2010.

And while adventure and scooter continue as the current flavours of the month, the sport/tour and touring segments took the biggest hits in 2011, down 32.4 and 14.5 per cent respectively.

In absolute numbers, naked remains the biggest segment with 16,800 sales in 2011, ahead of sport (12,851) and adventure (10,570).

The trend towards adventuure bikes in the UK has been brewing for a few years now and, with a number of new releases in 2012 straight into that target market -- the Triumph Explorer and Honda Crosstourer -- the sales figures for 2012 could make for some more illuminating reading.
