Uber launches motorcycle service in Bangkok
American giant to take on the locals in ThailandUber started its first-ever motorcycle service in the city of Bangkok where congestion on a daily basis leads to traffic speeds during rush hour in the capital of Thailand of only 11 km/h.
The Financial Market News reports that the startup began in San Francisco Bay offering limousine services and now wants to take on the workmanlike motorcycles that hordes of residents in Bangkok rely on daily to get around the packed streets.
Uber says it could help to untangle snarls of traffic that result in daily commutes that can take over two hours.
The head of expansion in Asia for Uber, Douglas Ma said that motorcycles are a big part of the commuting culture within Thailand.
In February, Uber started uberHOP in the Philippines that lets its commuters going in the same direction to share rides during rush hour at one flat fare.
Thailand might be ideal to test its network of motorcycles. Motorcycle taxis as well as tuk-tuks are familiar around the country.
