Tungate takes speedway opener

Australia is already in motorcycle racing mode for 2016, with the national speedway championship off and running

Rohan Tungate won a thrilling opening round of the 2016 Australian Speedway Solo Championship in Kurri Kurri, NSW on Saturday, January 2.

Tungate defeated fellow Hunter region rider Sam Masters in the A final, followed by Max Fricke and Brady Kurtz.

“I thought I chose the wrong starting position, but it worked out well," said Tungate, who finished sixth in the 2015 championship. “This is an even bunch of riders so you can’t afford to make the slightest mistake. Now I need to keep it going.”

Tungate also won the Jason Crump Invitational event in Kurri Kurri on Boxing Day last year, ahead of Justin Sedgmen, Fricke, Jye Etheridge and Crump.

Round two of the 2016 Australian Speedway Solo Championship will be held at Undera, Vic on Wednesday, January 6, followed by Gillman, SA on January 8 and the finale in Mildura, Vic on January 10.
