Triumph has unveiled the new Tiger 900 which it believes will set the benchmark in the adventure category. It replaces the outgoing Tiger 800, which was launched in 2010.
The Tiger 900 has been completely transformed with an all-new, more responsive 900cc triple engine, new start-of-the-art ride-enhancing technology, and an aggressive new Tiger styling. In addition, the new Tiger 900 range is significantly lighter than previous Tiger models.
Five variants will make up the Tiger 900 range. The Rally and Rally Pro are designed for maximum off-road adventure, and road focused capability and comfort. The GT and GT Pro are for more urban adventure. The base Tiger 900 is more road-focused but takes major steps forward in capability and style. The Rally and Rally Pro have spoked tubeless wheels (21-inch front, 17-inch rear), while the remaining models have cast alloy wheels (19-inch front, 17-inch rear).
The higher capacity and higher performance 900cc engine is now fully Euro 5 compliant and has a new unique 1,3,2 firing order for greater character and feel. The result is improved intake noise under load, more feedback from the engine to the rider, a distinctive engine sound and improved tractability and throttle feel. The new engine has 10% more torque than the Tiger 800, peaking at 87Nm at 7250rpm. There is more power across the entire rev range, with 9% more in the mid-range.
The bike is up to 5kg lighter than the previous generation. The base model weighs in the lightest with a claimed dry weight of 192kg, while the Rally Pro is the heaviest with a claimed dry weight of 201kg. The new steel trellis frame is not only lighter, but now has a more modular construction, with bolt-on aluminium rear sub-frame and bolt-on pillion hangers. Also featured is high-specification Brembo Stylema monobloc brakes and a large 20 litre fuel tank for advance touring capability.
High specification suspension is utilised across the Tiger 900 range. The base model, GT and GT Pro get Marzocchi components with manual adjustment of compression and rebound damping on the 45mm USD cartridge forks for the GT and GT Pro. The GT Pro gets electronically adjustable rear suspension, while the GT has manual preload, rebound damping adjustment. All three models have 180mm wheel travel up front and 170mm travel on the rear. The Rally and Rally Pro get more off-road focused suspension. They feature Showa components and more travel, with 240mm on the front and 230mm on the rear.
The electronics on new Tiger 900 have been tailored for each model. All models but the standard Tiger 900 feature class-leading 7” TFT instruments and new optimised cornering ABS and optimised cornering traction control. The Pro models get the My Triumph connectivity system and the new Triumph Shift Assist. All models have new LED lighting and mobile phone storage with USB charging. There are also six rider modes including Rain, Road, Sport, Rider, Off-Road and Off-Road Pro.
