Triumph Motorcycles is heading back to the track in a big way, with the British manufacturer announcing it has signed a contract with Dorna to supply engines to the FIM Moto2 World Championship for three years, staring in 2019.
Based upon the three-cylinder powerplant sourced from the new 2017 Triumph Street Triple (pictured), for Moto2 use the engine will be heavily race tuned to provide superior performance.
To that end, Triumph says the engine will feature revised inlet and exhaust ports, titanium valves with stiffer vale springs, a taller first gear ratio, a race kit alternator, a race-developed slipper clutch, a race ECU, revised engine covers for reduced width, and a new sump for an improved header pipe run.
In ‘road’ set-up, the new 765cc engine delivers 123hp at 11,700rpm and 77Nm of torque at 10,800rpm.
According to Paul Stroud (pictured, far left), Chief Commercial Officer for Triumph Motorcycles, the deal opens up a new era in the company's history.
"This is a significant moment for Triumph that brings an exciting new chapter to our 110-year racing history and builds on our celebrated TT and Supersport race winning triple engines," he said.
"We look forward to a long and thrilling relationship with Dorna and the Moto2 teams, riders and fans."
Meanwhile Carmelo Ezpeleta (pictured, second from right), Chief Executive Officer of Dorna, said the organisation was thrilled to have Triumph on board.
"We are very excited to be working with one of the world's most iconic motorcycle brands," he said.
"The Triumph triple engines are renowned for their strong, linear power and torque delivery and have achieved many successes on the track, making them the ideal choice for the Moto2 Championship. We are looking forward to the 2019 season and the beginning of a new generation of Moto2 in partnership with Triumph."
Bikesales will be attending the national media launch of the 2017 Triumph Street Triple at the end of June.
