Triumph Tiger 1200 coming soon

UK-based motorcycle maker Triumph has confirmed it is working on a 1200cc adventure bike to rival BMW machinery, and it may even get a shaft drive

One of the best selling adventure bikes on the market, the BMW R 1200 GS, will need to have its wits about it if it's continue its unbeaten run at the top, because Triumph has been working on a big bore adventure bike rival for the past few years.

Triumph sources have confirmed to the Bikesales Network that the company is indeed working on a big-bore Tiger adventure bike that will displace around 1200cc. And yes, it will be an inline three-cylinder engine, giving it a point of difference from its rivals.

The new model is expected to break cover later in the year and will powered by a new 1200cc triple expected to deliver a fair whack of power and torque. Power output is likely to be around 150hp (110kW) while torque could be around the 130-140Nm mark.

When it comes to researching and developing a new motorcycle, the engine is always the most expensive part - both in terms of design and manufacturing - and it is highly likely that Triumph will make use of the new big bore engine in other motorcycles further down the track.

Our UK colleagues at MCN are reporting that the new model will be called the 'Triumph Adventurer 1200', while our sources at Triumph have repeatedly used the term 'Tiger 1200'.

We'll know soon enough what Triumph will call the bike, however like the Triumph Tiger 800, the Tiger 1200 is expected to be offered in both standard and XC guises, the former packaged with a wheel hugging front fender, the latter featuring a higher cowling mounted beak-style fender. It is unclear as to whether the front suspension or wheel size will differ between the models.

The Tiger 1200 adventure bike is also reportedly being engineered with a shaft drive, presumably to appeal to the same sensibilities that attract buyers to the BMW R 1200 GS, and as per the Tiger 800, a range of accessories will be available.

Other details that are expected to materialise on the new adventure bike include a large fuel tank (possibly 20+ litres) and a single sided swingarm. No word on traction control or GPS systems.
