Generally, single-make road racing championships are fairly pedestrian affairs, but this one could certainly break the mould.
Infront Motor Sports, the promoter of the world superbike (WSBK) title, has announced a nascent seven-round European title will be held as an undercard to WSBK in 2010, where 24 riders will be aboard identical Triumph Street Triple R middleweight nakedbikes.
The Bikesales Network attended the Australian press launch of the Street Triple R earlier this year, and the bike's certainly dripping with attitude from every orifice.
Using the same engine as found in the Daytona 675, the Street Triple R, with uprated suspension and brakes compared to the standard Street Triple, should make for a fine race track tool, which the riders will find out first-hand in 2010.
The title, sponsored by ParkinGO, a network of airport carparks in Italy, will be managed by BE1 Racing (the team Garry McCoy races for in world supersport) and the Rs will be supplied with complete racing kits.
McCoy will even lend his support to the series.
"I think the ParkinGO Series is a brilliant idea and gives the opportunity to anybody that loves motorsport to be part of it," says McCoy. "I have heard a lot of people saying how much they would like to be us, well now they have the chance to be themselves in the same involvement of the top riders and have fun at the same time with the European championship."
The entry fee includes the bike, a test day, tyres for both races and test day, plus a set of rain tyres. BE1will be in charge of the transport of the bikes, technical structure and hospitality at the different circuits.
And the hit? It's 27,000 Euros ($A44,000) plus tax for those confirmed before January 22, and 30,000 Euros ($A49,000) plus tax thereafter.
The ParkinGO Series is open to riders from all countries and age with a UEM (European) license, limited to six riders per country.
One race per round will be held on the following dates:
11/04/2010 Valencia (Spain)
25/04/2010 Assen (Holland)
09/05/2010 Monza (Italy)
27/06/2010 Misano (Italy)
11/07/2010 Brno (Czech Republic)
01/08/2010 Donington (England)
05/09/2010 Nurburgring (Germany)
