As reported on Indonesian website Kompas Otomotif, Rudhy Siswanto – the head of Triumph’s Indonesian distributor, PT Global Motorcycle Trading – has revealed the British marque is set to produce a 250cc model specifically for the colossal Indian market.
If the model does indeed materialise, it will undoubtedly filter down to a variety of other developing Asian nations, and possibly further afield.
It’s thought the new model will be powered by a parallel-twin with styling reminiscent of the marque’s Street Triple and it will be produced in Triumph’s planned production facility in Narasapur, India, north of Chennai. The plant, which will be located on a massive 40-acre parcel of land, is expected to be up and running in 2014.
Such a model would compete with KTM’s 200 Duke and Honda’s CBR250, and would be competitively priced to suit.
While Triumph has progressively explored the vast majority of road-bike market segments since its rebirth in 1990, the 250cc niche represents uncharted territory. So too does the establishment of an Indian production facility, but then Triumph already has extensive experience in such endeavours, having previously opened three facilities in the Chonburi province of Thailand in recent years.
