Triumph 125cc in the works?

The Indian media is reporting that Triumph is working on a 125cc street bike in the sub-continent, which would be built locally in a similar exercise to KTM with its Dukes

We reported on Triumph's move to India earlier in the year, whose plans are to set up motorcycle assembly facilities in order to build and sell CKD Bonnevilles, Street Triples, Speed Triples and Daytonas in the near future.

We also predicted it would only be a matter of time before Triumph began catering models to local (rather than European) tastes, with a smaller 250cc Street Triple a potential new product.

Though the 250cc model has not been confirmed as yet, Indian newspaper

is reporting that an entry-level 125cc bike will break cover in 2013, citing "a person close to the development".

The newspaper article claims that Triumph will build the new model at its upcoming assembly plant in Karnataka, in the south India, quoting the anonymous source: "Officials from Triumph had met component suppliers during a meet in 2011. They had talked about plans for a cheaper, 125cc model, which may be built in India by next year."

Reports from the UK of small capacity bikes being tested around Triumph's Hinckley factory add fuel to the fire.

Smaller capacity motorcycles in India dominate the sales charts where anything above 400cc is considered 'premium' and is out of the price range of many Indian riders.

India is the world's second largest motorcycle market and as European and American sales continue to limp along, many motorcycle manufacturers are looking to gain a foothold in India.

KTM, as an example, build several small capacity KTM Dukes in India, and sells them both domestically and in Europe.
