Imagine a simplified GPS and telemetry system that was so compact it could integrated inside a pair of goggles. Imagine no more, because it's a reality.
Designed for snow sports, the Transcend goggles could easily be used - or the technology applied - for motocross or other motorcycling disciplines, which provides the wearer with a range of information from altitude to speed, location, temperature and distance, in both imperial and metric measurements.
Developed by Zeal Optics in conjunction with Recon Instruments, the companies reckon the Transcend goggles are the world's first GPS-enabled ski goggles. They look like a very cool toy, and even include a stopwatch and chronometer mode for timing purposes.
The makers claim that the tiny colour LCD screen is unobtrusive and is powered by a lithium-ion battery that delivers a claimed seven hours of operation.
Users can manipulate the interface via a trio of large buttons that can apparently be easily operated while wearing bulky gloves, and a USB interface allows users to download journey info, update software and recharge the battery via a micro USB charger. The software can also features Google Maps integration once downloaded onto a desktop computer.
Weighing 257 grams, there's a video below showing the goggles in use, and though no mention has been made of water or dust proofing, the electronic parts would have to be relatively robust to stand up to extreme snowboarding.
Launched on the auspicious date of the 10/10/10, two different Transcend goggle models are available, one with a photochromatic lens that automatically dims to reduce glare and direct sunlight which retails for US$499. The standard polarised models go for US$399.
