It looks like we’ll have to wait at least another year for a major update to the Yamaha YZF-R1. The 2012 model has just been announced, with traction control the biggest addition to the mechanical pie, while there’s also a special grand prix 50th anniversary YZF-R1 colour scheme.
Only 2000 50th anniversary models, in Pearl White/Rapid Red, will be produced, with Yamaha Motor Australia bringing one Down Under for the AMCN Expo at the 2011 IVECO Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix from October 14-16.
Other liveries set to come off the production line include Raven, Pear White/Candy Red, Team Yamaha Blue/White, but we’re not sure if we’ll be seeing them all in Australia.

Meanwhile, the beefed-up engine management system now features a MotoGP-derived six-mode traction control system. All the other Yamaha technical wizardy is still there, including the Yamaha Chip Controlled Intake, Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle and three-mode Variable Map Function.
Other updates include an all-new top triple clamp, redesigned footpegs, restyled headlamps, a revised upper fairing, and new LED position lights.
As for the rest of the machine, it’s business as usual, with the 998cc liquid-cooled in-line four-cylinder engine with crossplane crankshaft, slipper clutch and aluminium Deltabox chassis.
