Townley begins long recovery process
The New Zealander has now been operated on in Brisbane after his bad fall in last weekend's round two of the Australian Motocross ChampionshipBen Townley could be back riding in fourth months – that’s the forecast from the doctor who operated on him after last Saturday’s big fall during practice for the second round of the 2012 Australian Motocross Championship in Coonabarabran (NSW).
The 27-year-old Townley, who dominated round one of the championship and was planning to head stateside after Coonabarabran to ride for Chad Reed’s Honda team, suffered hip damage in the fall.
As Townley recovers in hospital, he is also coming to grips with the reality oh his situation.
“I can’t believe I am laying here in hospital,” Townley said. “I am supposed to be packing for America. I am fit and was looking forward to racing in either America or Australia. It’s not fun lying here I had really given everything and felt that I was the best prepared I had ever been this year.
“It is so hard to believe, but I have to accept it and focus on my recovery.”
Townley also acknowledged the great work of Racesafe director Simon Maas, Brendon Kiley of the Royal Flying Doctor Service and his surgeon, Dr Lawrie Malisano.
“I am overwhelmed by the extraordinary lengths of these men. I have been treated like an athlete and the respect they have shown me will never be forgotten. My family and I can’t thank them enough.”
