Top Kat for Phillis

Retiring his old Suzuki GSX1100 for a Katana upgrade ahead of this year's Aussie historic title at Phillip Island

Front-running Australian Historic competitor Robbie Phillis has a new 'Superbike' under construction, with a 1982 Suzuki Katana being built to contest the Australian Historic Championship at Phillip Island in early September.

Phillis, twice third overall in the Superbike World Championship, has been racing his original Mick Hone Motorcycles Suzuki GSX1100 for the past four years with great success.

But with reigning world endurance champion Steve Martin recording lap times in the low 1:40 bracket at this year's Island Classic on a 175hp (129kW) GSX1100, Phillis decided it was time for an upgrade.

"I want to keep my original bike pretty much untouched, so it's time to retire the ol' girl and put it in my loungeroom," said Phillis. "The new one will be more powerful and faster."

Phillis raced a Suzuki Katana to victory in the 1982 Superbike Series, with the new bike set to replicate the original bike in looks.
