With life returning to a degree of normality after the pandemic, the world’s best motorcyclists were once again able to hit the track or trail without any major restrictions and in front of packed crowds.
Here are five of our favourite sporting moments from 2022:
Queensland’s Jett Lawrence continued to establish his legacy in 2022, winning not one, but two AMA championships. The 19-year-old picked up the AMA Supercross 250 East title before winning his second AMA Pro Motocross 250 title. He also made his 450cc debut at the Motocross of Nations where he led Team Australia to third place alongside brother Hunter Lawrence and Mitch Evans.

Jett Lawrence claims first AMA Supercross title
When AMA Supercross gave up its FIM world championship rights in 2021, it was only a matter of time before someone else swept in. That someone was Australia’s SX Global, which is run by the same team behind the popular AUS-X Open event. The all-new WSX Championship launched in October 2022, kick-starting the first true global FIM World Supercross Championship series.

The return of Formula 1 to Albert Park caused a buzz around town, and MotoGP’s return to Phillip Island was no different. Even unpreceded rain before and during the weekend wasn’t enough to dampen the spirits of two-wheel fans, as 90,000 punters made the pilgrimage to the famous circuit for the first time since 2019.

Also returning for the first time since 2019, the famous Isle of Man TT once again lit up the Snaefell Mountain Course, with the world’s best road racers battling it out for victory. Sadly, the event was once again marred by tragedy, with five deaths across the week.

Isle of Man TT strikes back!
The Dakar Rally visited Saudi Arabia for the second year running, and it was Britain’s Sam Sunderland who triumphed aboard his GasGas factory machine. It was Sunderland’s second Dakar win, but the first for GasGas Factory Racing, who became just the third manufacturer to win the race since 2000.
