After a year of cancellations in 2020, motorcycle sport got back to business in 2021, with plenty of action off and on the track.
While some marquee events, like the Isle of Man TT, fell victim to COVID-19 once again, there was still much to celebrate and discuss in 2021. Here are our top five sporting moment from 2021:
Is it just us, or has MotoGP offered more thrills and spills in the last two seasons than ever before? It was another cracker in 2021 with many twists and turns (pun not intended), but in the end it was Fabio Quartararo who took the crown, becoming the first Frenchman to do so in the process.

Australia punches well above its weight in world motorsport (actually, world sport in general), but motocross is one discipline where success has never come easily. Aside from Chad Reed, no Aussie had won a major motocross title until Jett Lawrence’s breakthrough 250 MX title in 2021. The young Aussie is also kicking goals off the track, with brilliant marketing making him one of the most popular riders in recent memory.

Another brilliant Aussie success story in 2021 was Remy Gardner. Following in his legendary father’s footsteps, Remy will race in the premier class in 2022 alongside countryman Jack Miller. And his deal with KTM Tech3 came before he secured the Moto2 World Championship. Onya Remy!

With four previous attempts to his name, Argentine rider Kevin Benavides finally broke through for his maiden Dakar Rally victory. In doing so, he became the fifth different winner in six years and extended Honda’s win streak to two, following 19 years of KTM domination.

It wasn’t just the Formula 1 World Championship that ended with a Dutchman stealing the crown in thrilling fashion. KTM’s Jeffrey Herlings claimed his second MXGP crown in the last race of the season, defeating Kawasaki’s Romain Fvebre by just five points.
