TOKYO 2013: Yamaha R25

Yamaha has finally entered the 250cc entry-level sportsbike market, revealing its new R25 concept bike at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show
Rumours of Yamaha’s 250cc entry-level sportsbike have been circulating for years but now it’s finally here -- in concept form, at least.
Yamaha has chosen the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show to reveal its new R25 -- a concept 250cc machine that will take on models such as Honda’s recently unveiled CBR300R and Kawasaki’s runaway sales success, the Ninja 300.
While still in concept form, and essentially shown in race trim, Yamaha has said the model will go into production next year, adding further heat to the ultra-competitive learner market.
While Yamaha has released very few hard details on the machine, its two leading header pipes indicate it’s powered by a parallel-twin engine in a similar vein to Kawasaki’s Ninja. It will certainly be interesting to see how the new model fares in comparison to the equivalent Honda and Kawasaki powerplants, in terms of capacity and output.
The styling is pure YZR-M1 MotoGP racer and in fact Yamaha has released a YouTube clip of the R25 that begins with its focus on the top-tier machine. Factory pilot Valentino Rossi, suited up and ready for action, then bypasses the M1 in favour of the new R25. "It really packs a punch," Rossi says, although we suspect he’s not making a direct comparison with his regular ride…
Still, the R25 looks like a stunning bit of kit -- beautifully crafted and very much a part of Yamaha’s sportsbike family. That in itself is bound to create plenty of interest among the entry-level brigade.
Yamaha has said the model places an emphasis on fun and manageability.
"It boasts a powerful and sporty ride in the high rpm range while being easy to handle," states a Yamaha press release. "The R25 is positioned and offered as an entry model in the sportsbike category for developed markets like Japan and Europe, and as a top-performance sportsbike for emerging markets, primarily throughout Asia."
Learner riders are spoiled for choice these days but with the impending arrival of the R25 it looks like the purchasing decision just got even harder.
There’s no word yet on whether or not we'll see the model here in Australia but while we’re waiting here’s the Yamaha promo clip to whet your appetite…
