With the curtain set to go up on the 43rd Tokyo Motor Show (November 22 to December 1), Kawasaki will be attracting attention with two very different takes on the future of motorcycling.
With styling that wouldn’t look out of place in the sci-fi flick Tron, Kawasaki’s ‘J’ concept machine is an electric three-wheeler that offers a choice of riding positions. ‘Comfort’ mode delivers a more upright riding stance for city work while ‘Sport’ mode alters the ergonomics for aggressive sports riding. The J is powered by a battery cell and has two front wheels with a single rear wheel providing the drive. Kawasaki says it’s “a new personal mobility system that adapts to the type of travel required".
In a second study, Kawasaki’s boffins have also turned their attention to producing a new supercharged engine – the world’s first for a motorcycle, Kawasaki claims. Like the J, details of the donk are scarce at this stage, but with a strong history of investigating alternative motorcycle engine formats (Kawasaki was the first manufacturer to release a turbo bike – the Z1R TC of 1978) and of refining turbine technologies for a number of applications outside of motorcycles, Team Green is well placed to bring the concept to reality.
"Drawing on the knowledge gained from the design and production of gas turbines, we have created a motorcycle-use supercharged engine," states a Kawasaki press release. "By developing both the supercharger and engine concurrently and in-house, we aim to achieve a supercharged engine with unprecedented efficiency," it continues.
