Todd Smith untroubled in Finke victory

He was the pacesetter on day one, and continued his rich vein of form to claim victory. He led home brother Jacob to make it the first sibling quinella in 38 years

Honda’s Todd Smith has been crowned ‘King of the Desert’ after taking victory in the 38th running of the Finke Desert Race.

Following him across the line in second position was his brother and teammate Jacob, making for a sibling one-two for the first time in the event’s 38-year history. It was also Honda’s 20th win in the off-road classic, snapping a four-year winning streak by KTM.

Todd Smith returned to Alice Springs from the overnight stop in Finke in a time of two hours, one minute and 44 seconds (2:01.44). His total time for the event was 4:02.04, nearly four minutes ahead of Jacob (4:06.03), with Josh Green (Yamaha, pictured), 4:07.42) holding onto his third position after day one.

Jarrod Bewley (Husaberg, 4:09.30) was fourth, with Ivan Long (KTM, 4:10.44) rounding out the top five.

Four-time champion Ben Grabham (KTM) finished well back in an uncharacteristic 11th position.
