Australian Toby Price has slipped to ninth overall in the Dakar Rally, after a tough second stage in Saudi Arabia. The KTM rider was forced to open the stage and lost 12 minutes, finishing a distant 17th on the day.
Meanwhile, Ross Branch gave Botswana its first ever stage victory in the Dakar Rally. The Bas Dakar KTM rider blasted through the stage, picking his rivals off one by one, including the new overall leader, KTM’s Sam Sunderland. The British rider now leads the race by 1 minute and 18 seconds, with Pablo Quintanilla (Husqvarna) and Kevin Benavides (Honda) joining him in the top three.
Matthias Walkner (KTM) and Ricky Brabec (Honda) round out the top five. Branch’s heroics have promoted him to sixth overall.
Australian Yamaha rider Rod Faggotter finished one place behind his countryman Price, and currently sits 19th overall, 36 minutes behind Sunderland.
Fortunately for Price, he is only 7 minutes behind Sunderland and will have the benefit of being able to follow his rivals into stage three tonight.
Stage two was the first half of a ‘Super Marathon’ stage. Riders were only allowed ten minutes to work on their machines at the bivouac in a bid to even up the competition.
The third day of the rally will feature a 489km circuit, starting and finishing in Neom. The stage will feature a 404km special section, with mountains and canyons taking riders to the race’s highest altitude (1400m).
