The women tear up Broadford
One for the fast femmes, with a handful even opting to partake in some 'swinging' around the compact circuit in VictoriaMotorcycling Victoria put on another of their Girls Only Track days recently -- the fifth such staging.
Despite being held on a weekday, more than 30 female motorcyclists registered, including five who opted for a very special experience -- swinging, or passengering, on a racing sidecar outfit.
With bikes ranging from a venerable RD250 Yamaha two-stroke to a gleaming MV Agusta F4 and a Ducati 1198, plus some bikes wearing tyre-warmers, there was nothing girly about the machinery in the pits.
A broad spread of experience was represented, with some riders venturing out on a track for the very first time, while others were seasoned track-day junkies. Ages of the riders ranged from teenagers to ... um ... twenty-one years and several months. There were even a couple of attendees from interstate.
Out on the track, novices had the benefit of some friendly guidance from current and former racers acting as roving marshals. Later, while more advanced riders had the use of the track, the novices were given hints and tips on cornering, apexes and braking from California Superbike School instructor Stephanie Redman, aided by Jess Watkins, Tracey Davies and no less an authority than current ASBK rider Wayne Maxwell.
Half a dozen racing sidecar crews turned up to offer an insight into their unique form of racing, including Darryl Rayner and Matt Johnston, who competed at the Isle of Man this year, setting a 100 mph lap.
Despite having their custom-built racing transporter destroyed by a drunk driver just a week before, Aussie sidecar champs Footy and Melissa made available two outfits. While the pace was kept down for first-timers, when the pair teamed up, they let rip and gave a demonstration of how it’s really done!
The next Broadford Girl’s Only Track Day is scheduled for February 16th 2013, and being a Saturday, organisers expect a much bigger turn-out.
