The tricky skills session challenged contestants to stay dry, while manoeuvring through a tight course. The twist? The rookies also had to balance a full tank of water between their legs.
“The point of this challenge guys, is about being smooth, and the best way to be smooth is to have good throttle control,” said mentor and judge, Team Honda Racing boss Paul Free.
Teenager Brody Nowlan, the competition’s current leader, continued to keep second place Glenn Scott at bay. But only just. Both boys put in impressive performances, earning them praise from Free and the second mentor and judge, Daryl Beattie.
The skills session proved to be harder than it looked, with virtually every rookie finishing the task soaking wet.
Next up was the crucial Chicanes Points Challenge, with the contestant who completed the fastest lap taking out the challenge.
“The chicane challenge started with Alex (Cudlin) and, as the opening act, Paul and I both looked at each other and went ‘wowee!’ If it gets better then that it will be impressive,” Daryl said.
Cudlin threw down the gauntlet, and the remaining rookies felt the pressure to perform. Unfortunately that pressure proved too much for Glenn and Daniel Falzon – who both crashed on their runs.
“I am very, very disappointed. Obviously probably won't score any points, so we'll just have to do really well in the challenges to come,” Scott said.
After two of the rookies crashed out, the remaining challengers decided to take it easy, putting in slow but safe runs. With $20,000 cash on the line, Free was not impressed.
“I've gotta say, as the head of Team Honda Racing I was so disappointed in the approach that most guys took leading into that chicane, and just the way the bike was ridden,” said Free.
“There was so much wheel chatter from most guys going into that chicane.”
Nowlan continues to lead the “InsureMyRide The Ultimate Rider” standings on 29pts, ahead of Cudlin (26), Sam Maclachlan (24), Scott (23), Kyle Buckley (17), Falzon (17) and Mitch Levy (16).
