Episode five of “InsureMyRide The Ultimate Rider” on November 27 saw the seven riders learn that there’s more to being a champion motorcycle racer than just being fast. You also have to be fit and smart.

A physically demanding fitness session tested cardio and core strength. First up was a beep test, and while an overconfident Daniel Falzon was certain he would win it was 21-year-old Glenn Scott who prevailed.
AMCN editor Sam Maclachlan was the first to be eliminated as years of over-indulgence on Barbecue Shapes finally caught up with him. But he refused to use that as an excuse – because he had another.
“I haven't run in eight years, so I’m happy to get to nearly nine (in the beep test). Knees are fine, it's my ankle that's killing me,” Sam said.
Meanwhile, the dark horse of the competition, Brody Nowlan, pushed his body to the limit – dropping out of the beep test, and then collapsing, with his digestive tract in all sorts of bother.
“I just got like the biggest stitch on one of the runs,” Brody said.
“I normally don't eat or drink anything about four hours before I run, but we had lunch probably two hours ago.”
In the core hold, a challenge specifically designed to test each rider’s core strength, Mitch Levy surprised everyone and outlasted Scott, Alex Cudlin and Nowlan by holding his position for an amazing four minutes plus.
Back at the InsureMyRide The Ultimate Rider race track in Broadford, the morning’s hard work was rewarded when judges Daryl Beattie and Paul Free presented each rookie with an opportunity of a lifetime – a hot lap with Team Honda Racing’s Wayne Maxwell. Then it was time for the all-important Points Challenge, which focused on memory. Each rookie was given 15 seconds to memorise a series of numbers and symbols. They then had to complete a hot lap, and once finished had to recite as many numbers and symbols from memory as possible. The idea was to test how well each of the rookies could recall important information about the bike during race conditions.
Levy is in need of a memory upgrade, recalling just four out of a possible 12, while Cudlin, Maclachlan and Kyle Buckley all recalled five. Falzon netted six. Nowlan and Scott remembered seven apiece.
Nowlan continues to lead the “InsureMyRide The Ultimate Rider” standings on 23pts, ahead of Scott (22), Maclachlan (19), Cudlin (19), Falzon (16), Levy (16) and Buckley (13).

In episode six, the contestants will ride around a course marked with witches’ hats. However, their VTR250 will have a plastic bowl filled with coloured water attached to its tank. The riders must strive to not wet their pants, and the one who loses the least amount of water wins. The loser faces the shame of walking back to his fellow competitors with… well, you know what with.
InsureMyRide The Ultimate Rider airs on Saturdays at 6.00pm on ONE (and available to watch on-line at www.theultimaterider.com.au shortly thereafter).
