The Ultimate Rider

The battle between the seven riders for the chance to win $20K and a Honda test is intensifying, and the next stop is a gut-wrenching fitness test

Episode four of InsureMyRide The Ultimate Rider on November 17 was a party to a number of celebrations: contestant Glenn Scott turned 21, while 17-year-old Brody Nowlan came up trumps in the two challenges.

In a mechanical skills session, the seven riders’ bike knowledge was tested.

“Today we’re going to time how quickly you can change your bike’s rear wheel,” said mentor and judge Paul Free.

Moto GP legend Daryl Beattie didn’t hold back: “Time for some of you pretty boys to get your hands dirty!”

And while changing a tyre may sound like rudimentary, many of the contestants struggled -- even after a demonstration from Free, the boss of the Team Honda road racing team in Australia.

Nowlan excelled at the challenge, claiming long hours in the shed with his father helped him build his mechanical knowledge.

With the fun stuff over it was time to get serious in the next points challenge, which was all about conserving fuel. Each rookie received the same amount of fuel, but who could go the furthest on it?

19-year-old Mitch Levy didn’t seem to understand the brief, crashing out in his first lap.

“Mitch is an interesting one...someone that we've watched carefully throughout the challenges and for me it's about control for Mitch,” said Beattie.

“You know he’s fast, he’s got an enormous amount of ability, but he doesn’t at times know why he’s going fast and it's about control.”

Nowlan won from Scott, and the leaderboard shows Nowlan back in top spot on 16pts, ahead of Scott (15) and a tie for third between Sam Maclachlan and Alex Cudlin (both on 14).

The next challenge will see the seven contestants leave their bikes behind for a series of fitness tests that measure their speed, stamina and strength. They slog it out to see who stays longest in the beep test, the burpee challenge and the core strength trial.

InsureMyRide The Ultimate Rider airs on Saturdays at 6.00pm on ONE (and available to watch on-line at www.theultimaterider.com.au shortly thereafter).

And in news just to hand, a live chat will be held with Beattie on the InsureMyRide Facebook Page (www.facebook.com/insuremyride) on Saturday, November 24 at 6:30pm AEDT.
