New Zealander Burt Munro made history by setting a land speed record on the world’s fastest Indian, a 1920 Scout. To salute his passion for performance, Indian Motorcycle Company created The Spirit of Munro, a tribute streamliner powered by the all-new Thunder Stroke 111 engine which will power the upcoming Indian Chief.
Indian Motorcycle has teamed up with a group of filmmakers to turn back the clock and recreate a special time in the company’s rich history. This short movie on The Spirit of Munro pays tribute to the past as the Streamliner is blasted across a California dry lake bed.
The global reveal and launch of the all new Indian Chief will take place simultaneously in Sturgis, South Dakota and Sydney on August 4 – and the Bikesales Network will be there with plenty of images. The Chief first went on sale way back in 1922.
Following the unveiling, the bike will then go on sale in the fourth quarter of 2013 at a starting price of $28,995 rideaway. A national Indian Motorcycle dealer network will be announced closer to launch.
The new engine was publicly unveiled on March 9 at Daytona Bike Week and features a 111 cubic inch (1819cc), 49-degree, air-cooled V-twin, delivering 155.9Nm of torque. There’s certainly an air of familiarity for Indian-philes, with parallel pushrod tubes, finned heads, down firing exhausts and left-side air intake. There’s also a six-speed overdrive gearbox.
The Thunder Stroke 111 is built in Osceola, Wisconsin at Polaris’ engine assembly plant, with future full unit motorcycle assembly taking place in Polaris’ production facility in Spirit Lake, Iowa.
