The Monsterbike

It's not very stable, or fast, or practical. But the Monsterbike is nothing if not retro-kitsch-cool...

Powered by human legs, this contraption is not really a motorcycle, but it is certainly an intriguing enough design to warrant a closer inspection.

A modern-day Penny-farthing of sorts, this design has been dubbed the Monsterbike by its creator and has a top speed of about 3km/h (depending on the fitness/size of the rider).

It's the kind of thing that would not only add some colour to your garage, but would probably make you the envy of, um, historical re-enactors.

Basically a giant tyre with a seat, handlebars and frame that trails the largest component, not to mention the tiny rear wheels, the Monsterbike looks as though it takes a lot of exertion to ride (see the video below). Even though the gearing looks quite well suited to the application, you'd probably want to be fit to really cover any distance.

It's the kind of two-wheeled transport that takes the 'form over function' adage to the extreme, but by Jove it looks trendy!

Apart from the obvious negative aspects - the constant mounting and dismounting needed to really get your road rage point across, the chain coming off, the sheer weight, the single gear - there are some upsides to the Monsterbike. We're not sure what they are exactly - high riding position perhaps? - suffice it to say this bike would benefit greatly from a compact motorcycle engine.
