With its massively popular GT250R providing the major grunt work, Hyosung was once the fastest growing on-road motorcycle marque in Australia.
That was a decade ago, but now it appears to be all over for the the Korean brand in Australia, with no sales registered in the first quarter of 2018 and the official website – www.hyosung.com.au – now a ghost town.
The Melbourne-based Peter Stevens Importers (PSI) – which also has Triumph, Piaggio, Vespa, Aprilia and Moto Guzzi in its wide-ranging portfolio – has been the official Aussie distributor for Hyosung since 2004, and under its guidance the brand went ahead in leaps and bounds.
At one stage, the fully faired GT250R was the Aussie success story, selling closer to 50 units per month at one Perth dealership alone!
The Hyosung range also extended to LAMS and full-powered 650s, in cruiser, naked and sports models, but an ageing fleet became a chronic issue – as well as other manufacturers pushing hard into the LAMS space.
We were teased with the possibility of new product, but nothing eventuated other than minor styling tweaks to the existing line-up.
If it is the end of the road, Hyosung now joins Daelim as the second Korean marque to exit Australia in the last three years.
PSI is yet to make an official comment about Hyosung.
