At the 2017 EICMA motorcycle show in Milan, Yamaha took the next step in the evolution of its all-new parallel twin adventure bike by announcing it had made the transition from ‘concept’ to ‘prototype’ status.
Powered by a retuned version of MT-07’s 689cc parallel-twin engine, the machine’s called the Tenere World Raid, and Yamaha also used the event to announce plans for the bike’s, err, World Raid, where a group of riders will circumnavigate the globe aboard the prototype.
The World Road has now officially kicked off in Australia, with Aussie off-road star and Dakar campaigner Rodney Faggotter tasked with the first leg, which took him from Hervey Bay (Qld) to Dubbo (NSW) – a total distance of 1200km in a “bay to bush run”.
Next up for the Tenere World Raid is a 600km jaunt in Africa, with the pilot none other than multiple motorcycle and car Dakar winner Stephane Peterhansel. Then it’s onto South America (800km, Adrien van Beveren) followed the marathon conclusion in Europe: 1850km and a mix of pilots.
The Ténéré 700 World Raid is a follow on from the T7 concept first released in 2016, and it has a much lower profile – opening it up to a much wider audience, according to Yamaha.
The Ténéré 700 World Raid has a steel chassis and carbon-fibre bodywork, and the 2017 EICMA bike also had an Akrapovic exhaust – which is unlikely to see the light of day in the production model. That may also hold for the carbon-fibre panelling, but we’ll have to wait and see.
The all-new adventure bike is likely to be unveiled in production form later this year.
