Cockatoo Island on Sydney Harbour will host this year’s finale – round six -- of the Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour on September 17.
It’s taken 11 long years, but finally the exclusive invitation-only freestyle motocross (FMX) competition will converge on Australian turf for the climax of the 2011 world tour.
Of the 12 riders on this Saturday’s roster, four are from Australia – Robbie Maddison, Rob Adelberg, Cam Sinclair and Josh Sheehan. Jackson Strong would have been the fifth, but he’s now indisposed with torn ankle ligaments.
The balance of the field comprises:
Adams leads the title on 365pts, ahead of Torres (325), Villa (270) and Australian Blake Williams (215).
That means either Adams or Torres will be crowned the 2011 champion at Cockatoo Island, which is the largest island in Sydney Harbour, as well as being a former imperial prison, industrial school, reformatory and gaol. Cockatoo Island's prison buildings were added to UNESCO's World Heritage list along with 10 other Australian convict sites in July, 2010.
