Relaunched Italian brand SWM has introduced a LAMS-approved middleweight dual-sport machine to the Australian marketplace.
Designed with the Husqvarna TE 630 in mind and powered by a bored-out 599cc version of the liquid-cooled 576cc DOHC engine found in the firm’s TE 610, the SWM RS 650R will carry an introductory price tag of just $8990 plus on roads.
The level of componentry is high for the sub-$9k price point (which will only last until 31 January, 2016), with the RS 650R employing a Brembo brakes package as well as a Sachs rear shock matched to a Marzocchi front end.
The fuel-injected bike tips the scales at 144kg, has a fuel capacity of 12 litres, a seat height of 900mm and its off-road intentions are highlighted by a 21-inch front wheel.
SWM (an acronym for Speedy Working Motors) was launched in 1971 and manufactured motocross, trials and enduro bikes until it ceased production in 1984. With Chinese funding, former Cagiva employee Ampelio Macchi relaunched the brand at last year’s EICMA motorcycle show in Milan.
The 650R is the first of seven Husqvarna-powered models announced earlier this year including enduro, supermoto, naked and scrambler models. At this stage it’s unclear how many of the seven will be made available in Australia. Watch this space.
