Suzuki pulls plug on US operation

But only in its unprofitable automobile division, with a fresh focus on its motorcycle, ATV and boat arms
Citing a strong Yen, market trends – ie a lack of demand for its products – and stringent U.S. environmental and safety regulations, Suzuki Motor Corp oration will withdraw its automobile sales business from America, leaving motorcycles, ATVs and boats to be the flag bearers for the company. Suzuki has been selling cars in America for nearly three decades.
Suzuki sold just 21,188 vehicles in the United States in the first 10 months of 2012, a five per cent drop from the previous year at a time when the overall market was up by 14 per cent. It was the worst result from all the mainstream brands.
According to a Reuters report, American Suzuki Motor Corp, the sole distributor of Suzuki vehicles on mainland America, will file for bankruptcy with $346 million in debt, of which $173 million is owed to Suzuki group companies.
